Brief History
The African Center for Health, Climate & Gender Justice Alliance (ACHCGA) originated in 2021 as a youth-led initiative committed to addressing the intersecting crises of climate change, gender inequality, and health. Its growth accelerated in 2022, inspired by the UNFPA Youth Working Group’s call for meaningful youth engagement in climate action and resilient health systems, as well as insights from the global review “Taking Stock: Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights in Climate Commitments” conducted by UNFPA and Queen Mary University of London. These findings highlighted critical gaps in integrating gender equality, SRHR, and climate injustice that disproportionately affect women, children ,and youth, who form the majority of Africa’s climate-vulnerable populations.
ACHCGA was officially registered in 2024, emerging not only as an organization but as a continental alliance uniting women, youth, children, Indigenous peoples, and frontline communities. Today, it champions resilient health, strengthens gender justice, and advances climate solutions grounded in the lived realities of those most affected. Through evidence-based advocacy, Loss and Damage negotiations, and community-driven innovation, ACHCGA is shaping an equitable and climate-secure future for Africa.
