Who We Are
The African Center for Health, Climate & Gender Justice Alliance (ACHCGA) is an African women-led nonprofit working at the exact intersection of climate justice, resilient health systems, gender equality, Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR), and climate finance. We are a feminist, youth- and Indigenous-led institution founded on one conviction: the women, girls, and frontline communities most affected by the climate crisis must be the ones shaping the solutions to it.
We believe the climate crisis is fundamentally a justice issue. Women, girls, youth, Indigenous Peoples, pastoralists, persons with disabilities, and displaced communities contribute the least to global emissions yet bear the greatest burden of climate impacts through collapsing health systems, rising gender-based violence, and displacement. ACHCGA exists to transform this inequity through evidence, advocacy, innovation, and locally led action, turning global commitments into resources that reach the ground.
Theory of Change
Theory of Change
Goal: To create a future where everyone thrives in a healthy environment through effective climate action, resilient health systems, social enterprise, and gender justice.
Pathway to Change
- Climate Action: By collaborating with feminist organizations and the Women in Gender Constituency, we will advocate for gender-inclusive climate policies that prioritize reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to climate change impacts. This approach integrates gender equity as a critical component of climate justice, ensuring comprehensive solutions that uplift marginalized groups.
- Resilient Health: To strengthen healthcare systems and ensure they are resilient to climate-related shocks, we will focus on increasing access to Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) services, particularly in humanitarian settings. This includes advocating for the implementation of the Minimal Initial Service Package (MISP) to address urgent health needs during crises.
- Gender Justice: We will promote gender equality and human rights through advocacy, awareness, and partnerships, ensuring equal access to resources and opportunities for all. Supporting grassroots social enterprises led by youth in underserved communities will further advance gender equity by fostering sustainable economic development and creating economic opportunities that empower marginalized groups.
- Social Enterprise: We will foster the growth of social enterprises that address environmental, health, and social challenges at the community level. By providing support and resources to women and youth-led initiatives, we aim to develop sustainable, community-driven solutions that enhance climate resilience, economic opportunities, and social well-being.
- Budget Advocacy and ESG Practices: We will elevate community capacity in budget-making processes through training and collaboration with the Coalition of Health Research, Advocacy, and Development (CHReaD). Additionally, we will promote the adoption of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices among civil society, the private sector, and local governments, ensuring that climate action aligns with social justice principles
Outcome: These actions will lead to reduced greenhouse gas emissions, strengthened community resilience to climate shocks, equitable access to healthcare services, the empowerment of communities capable of advocating for gender and climate justice, and the growth of sustainable social enterprises, ultimately contributing to a healthier, more inclusive future for all.
